Birth and youth
Saint Anthony of Padua, born Fernando de Bulhões in Lisbon on August 15, 1195, is one of the most beloved and venerated saints in the Catholic tradition. Coming from a noble family, he received an excellent education and in his youth joined to the simple and radical life of the Franciscan friars.
His life is full of significant events and deep devotion: hiseloquence and profound theological knowledge soon made him a well-known preacher, engaged in the fight against heresies in northern and southern Italy, contributing significantly to the spread of the Christian faith .
Death and canonization
Despite his young age, Anthony died in Padua on June 13, 1231. Less than a year later, Pope Gregory IX proclaimed him a saint, recognizing his holiness and influence. His proclamation as a Doctor of the Church ( a title bestowed on those saints who have distinguished themselves by their knowledge and teaching) by Pius XII in 1946 is further recognition of his profound understanding and interpretation of the Gospel, which continues to inspire believers around the world.
The Basilica of St. Anthony in Padua, erected over his tomb, is now a place of pilgrimage for millions of faithful each year, drawn not only by his spirituality but also by the sanctuary's artistic and architectural richness.
Devotion and iconography
St. Anthony is generally depicted as a Franciscan friar wearing a habit, holding the baby Jesus and white lilies. His image is spread throughout the world and he is often invoked to obtain graces and intercessions. His feast day is celebrated on June 13 each year.
